Abstract: In the context of rapid digital transformation, smart cities increasingly rely on IoT devices, sensors, intelligent transportation systems, and energy management infrastructures. Wireless networks form the backbone of these interconnected systems but introduce significant security vulnerabilities that threaten data privacy and system reliability. This paper presents a systematic review and comparative analysis of penetration testing and vulnerability assessment methods for wireless networks across multiple smart cities. Using bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer, the study identifies key research trends and gaps in existing approaches. The findings indicate that while current tools and methodologies provide partial improvements in security assessment, more robust and adaptive frameworks are required to address the complexity of smart city environments. The paper concludes by outlining future research directions, including the development of tailored security frameworks and exploration of emerging threat vectors.
